Set valid audit criteria

Learn why ISO 45003 is audited as a benchmark, how to set valid audit criteria, and how to decide whether a gap is a nonconformity, observation or opportunity for improvement.

Audit fairly and sensitively

Build a risk-based programme and a sample that reaches every worker group, protect personal data, interview sensitively and respond safely to disclosures.

Report and follow up

Write clear findings and a report that protects confidentiality, review root causes, verify corrective action and run an annual health check.

About the course

Psychosocial risk is now firmly on the audit agenda. UK employers must already assess work-related stress as part of a suitable and sufficient risk assessment, and they face new harassment duties from 30/10/2026. But how do you audit psychological health and safety fairly, sensitively and accurately? This practical six-hour course shows you how. You will learn to set valid audit criteria when the reference standard, ISO 45003:2021, is guidance rather than requirements, so that your findings are credible and defensible. You will work through ISO 45003 clause by clause, turning good practice into audit questions and evidence requirements, with sample checklists you can adapt. You will learn to plan a risk-based audit programme, build a sample that reaches night, remote, lone and agency workers, and protect confidentiality and personal data throughout. The course gives particular attention to the human side of auditing: interviewing workers and managers sensitively, taking a trauma-aware approach, and knowing exactly what to do if someone discloses distress or harassment during an audit. You will then learn to grade and write clear findings, report without identifying individuals, and follow up with root cause analysis that focuses on how work is designed. Each module includes a narrated slide presentation, a detailed handout and a quiz. You will receive an ISO Training Institute certificate of completion when you pass the final exam. Who this course is for: internal auditors adding psychosocial risk to their audit programme; management system auditors extending into psychological health and safety; health and safety managers and advisers; HR professionals responsible for wellbeing, conduct and absence processes; and consultants supporting UK organisations with ISO 45003-aligned arrangements. Please note: ISO 45003:2021 is a guidance standard and there is no certification to it. The certificate of completion is not an auditor qualification. Your organisation decides who is competent to carry out its internal audits.
